Full context:   In 1975 and 1976, the American astronomers Frank Drake and Carl Sagan searched at Arecibo for signs of Type II civilizations in four galaxies of the Local Group: M33, M49, Leo I and Leo II. The year before, the two men had sent mankind's first message to M13. The results were published as "The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence" in Scientific American in May 1975.
